How long does a cat pregnancy last
A normal feline pregnancy lasts 61–70 days from mating. The length depends on the breed: shorthair cats deliver on average on day 61, semi-longhair on day 65 and longhair on day 70. The Maine Coon is a semi-longhair breed, so day 65 is the reference for our queens. Kittens born before day 58 are usually not viable; if labour has not started by day 70, see a veterinarian.
How to tell that a cat is pregnant
The first visible sign appears around day 21: the nipples turn pink and swell (especially noticeable in first-time mothers). From day 21–28 an ultrasound confirms the pregnancy, and from day 45 an X-ray shows the kittens’ skeletons so you can count them. In the second half of pregnancy the belly rounds out, appetite grows, and a week before delivery the queen starts looking for a quiet nesting place.
