Check the weight

Cats are often overfed: a smaller cat may weigh more than others yet look noticeably smaller — that is most likely obesity, and a vet visit is advisable. A healthy Maine Coon keeps growing until 3–4 years of age, so there is no need to rush: size comes with time.

How a Maine Coon grows

Maine Coons are born at 100–150 g, slightly heavier than kittens of other breeds, and gain 100–150 g per week in the first month. By 3 months a kitten weighs about 2 kg; by 6 months a male reaches 4–6 kg and a female 3–4.5 kg. Growth is fastest in the first year, but Maine Coons reach full size only at 3–4 years: an adult male weighs 6–11 kg, a female 4.5–7.5 kg.

Weight is not the point — size is

The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic breeds, but heavy weight alone is not a sign of quality. Cats are often overfed: a smaller cat may weigh more than others while looking noticeably smaller. That is most likely obesity and calls for a vet visit. Judge the proportions: a healthy Maine Coon has a visible waist, and the ribs can be felt under muscle, not fat.

What affects a kitten’s weight

Sex (males are noticeably bigger), the parents’ genetics, litter size, diet quality and health. Kittens from large litters may start smaller but usually catch up by one year. Feed a Maine Coon or large-breed kitten food and weigh the kitten weekly in the first months to spot deviations early.
